Mealtime does not have to mean a bowl on the floor and dinner gone in ten seconds. With a snuffle mat, you can turn part of your dog's usual kibble into a short nose-work game. No extra treats required. You simply move food your dog already eats into the fleece folds.
If you are brand new to snuffle mats, start with our beginner's guide or the first-week plan. This post is about using the mat as a mealtime tool, not as a second snack.
Why use dinner (or breakfast) instead of treats
Treats add calories fast. Using a portion of the daily meal keeps the total the same while giving your dog something to do with their nose. Small, dry pieces of kibble drop between the fleece strips and stay put better than soft or sticky foods.
Pick one meal, or half of one meal, to start. Leave the rest in a bowl or a slow feeder so your dog still finishes a full portion.
Set up in under two minutes
- Measure the portion you will use from your dog's normal meal.
- Shake the fleece snuffle mat open on a non-slip floor.
- Scatter the kibble: some on top, some tucked under the folds.
- Say a simple cue like "find it," then let your dog work.
- Pick the mat up when the food is gone so it stays a mealtime game, not an all-day chew toy.
Stay in the room. A snuffle mat is a supervised activity.
How hard should you hide the food?
Match the difficulty to your dog:
- Easy: most pieces visible on top. Good for first tries or picky sniffers.
- Medium: half visible, half under the top layer of fleece.
- Harder: most pieces deep in the folds, with a few easy finds so your dog does not give up.
If the game ends in under a minute, hide deeper or use smaller pieces. If your dog walks away, go easier and try again before the next meal.
A simple weekly pattern
- 2–3 days a week: serve part of a meal in the snuffle mat.
- Other days: bowl, slow feeder, or a short indoor game on rainy days (see our rainy-day games).
- Keep sessions short. Ten minutes is plenty for most dogs.
You do not need to use the mat at every meal. A few solid sessions a week beat a mat that sits unused because it feels like too much work.
Cleaning after mealtime
Shake out crumbs after each use. When the mat needs a wash, hand wash in warm soapy water, rinse well, and air dry fully before the next meal. A damp mat and dry kibble do not mix well.
Safety reminders
- Supervise every session and put the mat away when done.
- Check for loose or torn fleece before each use.
- Count snuffle-mat food as part of the daily portion, not on top of it.
- Give multi-dog homes separate space so meals stay peaceful.
Want a lick option too?
Some dogs like sniffing one day and licking the next. The Lick Mat and Snuffle Mat Set covers both. The 3-piece Dog Enrichment Toy Set adds the bone-maze slow feeder for meals that need to last longer. Not sure which tool fits? Our snuffle mat vs lick mat guide compares them side by side.
